Press TV election special
Press TV, (Iranian news channel broadcast in English) had a week long special talking about the 2009 elections. The first "show" gives general information about the Iranian election process and what's going on with complaints that candidates have made about the election. In the following shows analysts and pundits (mainly pro Ahmadinejad) are brought in to discuss the turmoil.

This is a really good place to start to understand the basics of the Iranian election. The question I would ask you (and this is directed at everyone) is what is being left out and glossed over? An example in the first minute of the first video is the statement that while anyone can register to run for President all the candidates undergo a vetting process that determines who actually gets to stand for election. Who is this group doing the vetting? What are their criteria? These videos include a good overview, but it is kind of like wikipedia-a good place to start, but a bad place to stop. Keep digging, and have fun with this....
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch the whole thing yet... but, what about women??
ReplyDeletewhat about women? be more explicit in your concern. I'm the only one allowed to put up random questions without enough context--you guys need to spell things out! :>
ReplyDeleteDo they place all the candidates in almost an application process to guard against western influences? I know that Iran personally has had that type of event take place with a western picked figure head placed in office. I think that that concern is obsolete in modern times though. That is an old 1950s technique of taking over a region and a country. I think that a leader can be a friend and ally to the west, but I think it is difficult to actually place a leader there in today's times.
